Carnovsky: Innovation in design - Washington Post

Normal light

Carnovsky paper adorns the walls of the DreamBagsJaguarShoes gallery, the first installation of the wallpaper designs in the U.K. In regular daylight, the wallpaper is a collection of indiscernible shapes, but when shown under red, blue and green light, clear patterns emerge.

The paper responds to the RGB color spectrum, a model in which red, green and blue light is combined in various ways to create a wide array of colors. When the light changes, it reveals one of the three overlaid patterns.

The design on display in London is officially called, "RGB - The Black Series."

According to a press release from the Carnovsky design duo, the installation is divided into white and black, "as if they were the day and the night."

 Blue light

The blue filter "makes an entire guffawing monkey's tribe emerge embroiling with the other creatures behind the dense vegetation," according to a press release from Carnovsky.

In red light, all of the jungle animals appear, in both white and black relief.

"We have always wanted to explore the concept of 'Jungle,' " writes the design duo in a press release.

"The jungle subject, with its exuberant, twisted and redundant vegetation that hides bizarre creatures, lends us to the exploration of another theme: the night," writes the design duo in a press release.

The print shows "the jungle clearly" in green light, according to a press release from the design team.

In a guest piece for Forbes, Hayden Shaughnessy writes, "The Carnovsky papers have been on display elsewhere — I can't help thinking this is as good as any screen-based, tech-centric innovation. I love it and the sense of renewing the visual landscape."
