A community-wide sign system can help create a civic identity and bring tourists and visitors to a community.

That is the message by Frazier Associates, a Staunton architectural and graphic design firm that has developed "wayfinding signs" for communities in Virginia and several other states. At the request of the Community Partnership for Revitalization (CPR), Frazier Associates has developed three design options for a wayfinding sign system for Rocky Mount.CPR has already shown the sign options to several community groups and organizations in Rocky Mount.CPR hopes to make a presentation soon to town council on the design options for the wayfinding signs, said Whitney Harmon, CPR's executive director. She said that the cost for preparing the three options was paid by the Virginia Main Street program, CPR's parent organization.Harmon said that Rocky Mount residents can see examples of wayfinding signs in other communities at www.frazierassociates.com.According to Frazier Associates, a wayfinding sign system can:"Create a qualify brand image for a locality by tying it into other promotional materials and the municipal website."Promote community attractions and destinations more effectively."Enhance the visitor experience and encourage longer stays or return visits."Increase the civic pride of all residents for their own community. The design philosophy behind the wayfinding signs is "knitting communities together through design," according to the graphic designers. The wayfinding sign projects typically include gateway welcome signs, directional signs and parking signs. The result is a comprehensive graphic brand, which can extend beyond signs to advertising and websites as well.Harmon said that the wayfinding signs could replace some of the existing sign clutter with clear and neat signs to replace multiple traffic and directional signs. "We want to capture the attention of visitors and direct them to the town's attractions, including Ferrum College," she said.Harmon said that the wayfinding sign system could be implemented in Rocky Mount as funds are available."It can be done over several years as the budget permits," she said."The number of signs would depend on the funds that are available," Harmon added.
