Design Unveiled for New Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive - New York Times (blog)
The University of California, Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive on Wednesday presented the schematic design for the transformation of a former printing plant into its new home, designed by the New York firm Diller Scofidio + Renfro.
Located at 2120 Oxford Street in Berkeley's arts district, the $100 million project is scheduled to be completed in late 2015; $65 million has been raised so far. The design combines the existing 1939 concrete Art Deco-style building, unoccupied since 2004, with a new metal-clad, skylighted structure that will include galleries, a 32-seat screening room, a store and a learning center.
"They have managed with great dexterity and ingenuity to accommodate the limitations and opportunities of the site and the constraints of the budget in concert with our programmatic requirements to create a facility that I think will be really a surprising and beautiful and highly functional addition to the Bay Area cultural scene," the museum's director, Lawrence Rinder, said in an interview.
The museum began planning for a new home in 1997, when an engineering survey determined that its current building on Bancroft Way did not meet present-day seismic standards and could not be upgraded to meet those standards without eliminating the open space required for the museum's exhibition program. After abandoning a 2006 design by Toyo Ito & Associates in 2009 because of the recession, the museum searched for a new firm.
