The newest Windows operating system will include an interface designed for touch-screens and a focus on "apps," Microsoft announced Tuesday.

"We reimagined Windows," said Steven Sinofsky, president of Microsoft's Windows and Windows Live division at a preview event for Windows 8 at Microsoft's Build conference in Los Angeles.

"From chipset to the user experience, Windows 8 brings a new range of capabilities without compromise."

Windows 8 will work with the full spectrum of devices, from tablets to PCs, and support a variety of chips and sensors, the company said.

Its look and feel is based on Microsoft's "Metro" design language, which the company says is focused on being modern, clean and fast, with a focus on content and typography.

Microsoft also announced a Windows Store that "will allow developers to sell their apps anywhere Windows is sold worldwide." Microsoft already has an app store for phones running its Windows Mobile operating system.

Some of the Windows 8 features highlighted by Microsoft include:

  • A focus on providing a "fluid touch-browsing experience" through Internet Explorer 10.
  • Apps that communicate with each other. This will allow users to perform tasks such as selecting photos from different places, such as the Flickr photo sharing site, the Facebook social network and the computer's hard drive, to email to a friend.
  • Automatic syncing of cloud services across multiple devices.
  • An enhanced task manager and Windows explorer with options for multi-screen setups.
  • More efficient use of memory compared to Windows 7.
